I learned to knit using Debbie Stoller's book Stitch n Bitch . She epnalixs everything nicely, and has lots of pictures to help you along. I also learned to crochet using her Happy Hooker book after several failed attemps with a beginner learn to crochet guide. it takes a little bit to get used to holding onto the needles. I've changed the way I hold them and the way I hold the yarn several times over the years till I found a way that works best for me. I would also suggest using a worsted weight yarn instead of a chunky yarn to begin with, and using either wood or bamboo needles in size US7. Chunky yarn and needles can be a little hard on the hands and aluminum needles are a bit slippery.

Hi! I don't usually mnmceot, but I wanted to send you some words of encouragement. Hang in there you will get it eventually! I would suggest that you call on one of your knitting friends or a local yarn shop to help you out there really is nothing like seeing someone else, having them show you, having them stop you when you've done it wrong, etc. Heck, if I lived anywhere close, I'd come over just for the chance to hold the baby while you practiced I think it's pretty amazing that you're trying a new craft so soon after giving birth!Best wishes!S

Er, well. Maybe. I've pulled it out again (I ralley can't see myself wearing pink/lilac socks) but i did enjoy those nine rows. I shall have to dig around my stash to see if I have any other suitable yarns. The merino I had in mind didn't have good stitch definition which would be a pity for that pattern! And WELL DONE YOU for finishing CPH! @Katherine: So far it's a very simple knit but that's good for knitting groups and the like. Hmmm.. I'd be interested to see how they make it into a film there are certain aspects which might be slightly too provocative for a mainstream film..

I can confirm rleravy too! An amazing resource of patterns and help when you need it. The key is it is easy once you get the hang of it . Getting the hang of it takes time and practice and that's a lot more than 2 hours. You wouldn't expect a new sewer to be able sew perfection in a few hours.Besides rleravy, yarn shops and knit groups are a great resource also. Usually yarn shops have classes and knit groups are always ready to help bring someone over to the knit side. The type of yarn you have can make a big difference on how easy it is to pick up. I recommend a nice wool. Something like Cascade 220 or malabrigo. The first row is always the hardest (stitches tend to be tighter) and often tension is what a beginner has to work on the most. Good luck and don't give up!

Hi lazyknitter,Thank you :-) I guess I read so many blogs of ahmecpliscod knitters that I feel a little silly sometimes posting about small projects LOL.Hi Mim,It is! I have little patience, so these were very rewarding.Hi redhead,Do make a pair and share :-) Enjoy the patties!Hi Kez and Fay,Thank you!Hi Kelle,Thanks :-) It's funny isn't it, I'm trying to learn crochet and just can't get the hang of it at all! I am a visual learner, so I need a teacher, but I'm loving YouTube for their how-to videos.Hi Belinda,Thanks, I know what you mean. I had no idea what those things were either until I started but fortunately they were pretty straight forward.Hi Hughesey,Oh yes, how good is YouTube? It's my first port of call for how-to when knitting - but it's funny I can't crochet at all! My fingers get all tangled trying to manipulate the hook & yarn LOL.Hi Patricia,Thanks :-)Hi Joanne,Yes, I was thinking the same thing - the tutorial gives a link to faux buttons made from beer bottle caps which actually look pretty funky. Pity we don't drink bought beer any more LOL.Hi dixie,Felting is on my To Learn list as well, I'm hoping to have mastered it before my kids are too old to benefit from the great range of felted toys around on the 'net.Hi Helen,If you click on "these slippers" highlighted in brown in my post, you should go to the link for the pattern. Let me know if it isn't working :-)Hi Christine,Oh I think I'm long way from selling any of my knitted goods yet, I'm just not that good! Luckily my kids don't care about any imperfections :-)Cheers,Julie

I strongly gsugest checking out Stitch n Bitch by Debbie Stoller. A friend showed me the basics of casting on and a regular stitch then moved to another state. Yes, I was that bad of a student. I was stuck sewing scarves because I didn't know how to do anything but go in a straight line! I had tried a million books and a friend gsugested this one. It's written in English rather than you should already know these knitting terms. And it's humorous to boot. I read it and then watched some youtube videos to see things in action. That gsugested, have you thought about crocheting? Or are you completely for knitting? Crocheting is easier personally. A lot of the difficulties with knitting is the awkwardness of holding the needles and if you mess up you most likely have to start all the way over. Crocheting is nicer to you you can pull the needle out and undo a few stitches and keep going. It also is much, much faster. So you can make something quickly which motivates you to keep going. The same lady has a crochet book, it's called Happy Hooker. The names make me giggle.

My first Knit Michigan. I had great fun chatting with other knitters and learning some new techniques. The location was great even if parking was a bit of a hassle. A super idea to recycle books & patterns. Everyone loves a freebee! I was disappointed that the yarn dyeing table was unmanned for awhile and I didn't get to try it. Thanks, to all the vendors and volunteers that made it a fab event. I'm already planning to attend next year.
