Making a difference takes many hands

It all begins in your hands.  We need the hands of knitters, crocheters, or sewers.  We need the hands of someone that wants to help others, help fight back against cancer, and help someone feel empowered.  When helping others, we also help ourselves.

Cancer robs us of power in so many ways.  Making these comfort items may give the recipients and the makers hope.

From your hands, the chemo caps, blankets for the infusion area, various types of pillows, and Knitted Knockers (TM) are gathered at Collection Centers around the state of Michigan.  The Centers forward the finished items to Knit Michigan, Inc., in Shelby Township, MI.  These may be mailed or lovingly couriered.

We have a small group of volunteers that label and package each comfort item with care and use instructions. Once items are individually packaged, we ship a mix of items to cancer units around the state.  We ship 80-100 boxes a year.  For the first 15 years, we hand-delivered from Baraga to Detroit and all points in between.  We have recently switched to shipping our donations.  This makes it easier on our volunteers and helps the packages get to the right unit within the organizations in a more direct manner.

How you can help:

  • We are always in need of makers.
  • We have a group of volunteers that currently meet once a month at ChiaoGoo in Troy, MI, to help with the individual packaging of the comfort items.  We also make “kits” for blankets and chemo caps.  The beauty of this volunteer job is that we match your skills to the work that needs to be done.  Whether you knit, crochet, sew, or are just able to stuff pillows and label bags, we provide instructions and you provide the gift of your hands.
  • If you are traveling, ask a Collection Center if they have items ready for delivery to Shelby Township.  We appreciate the help.
  • If you are a maker, please label your items, including your name.  Adding your name adds a personal touch and provides a real person to write a thank you note to.  Your first name is fine.
  • Volunteer to help staff our Collection Center and Sale Booth at Michigan Fiber Festival in August.
